Reference code
Reference code
Definition
Unique identifier associated with an archival description published in the Archives Catalogue. Researchers use reference codes to request access to archival material. Archives staff use reference codes to retrieve archival material from secure storage areas.
Introduction
Reference are similar to library call numbers. They uniquely identify a resource found in the Archives Permanent Collection. Reference codes are created by combining a Collection ID with identifiers for boxes and folders. Some reference codes include identifiers for individual items within the box or folder.
Conventions for creating reference codes
Section 7 of the University Archives Procedure Manual provides guidance on creating reference codes.
