Definition

The assessment of the technical characteristics of records for their ability to be preserved as part of the Archives Permanent Collection

Introduction

Technical appraisal includes considerations such as:

  1. Specialized equipment needed to play back the media
  2. Cost and feasibility of reformatting or migrating for preservation and access
  3. File formats of digital records
  4. Suitability of digital preservation infrastructure for preserving and making accessible digital files

Findings from technical appraisal can influence selection decisions made during archival appraisal, especially when considering moving images and sound recordings.
