Definition

File formats (also known as containers or wrappers) are formats with defined technical specifications that describe how data and metadata coexist in a computer file that can be stored and accessed in digital storage.

Introduction

File format specifications can be proprietary or open-source. Accessibility of technical specifications for file formats is a key consideration when selecting formats for long-term digital preservation.
