Definition
The role played by those persons or client systems that provide the information to be preserved. This can include other OAISes or internal OAIS persons or systems.
Introduction
Section 2.1 of OAIS provides a simple environment model of an OAIS:
Producers, Management, and Consumers interact with the OAIS in different ways. According to OAIS, "Producer is the role played by those persons, or client systems, which provide the information to be preserved." Producers provide information in the form of Information Packages known as Submission Information Packages (SIPs). Producers can also play the role of Consumer.
Section 2.3.2 of OAIS provides a summery of Producer interactions with the OAIS.
The Producer-Archive Interface Methodology Abstract Standard (PAIMAS) and the Producer-Archive Interface Specification (PAIS) provide extensive information and technical specifications on how to establish a Producer-Archive Project and define SIPs. PAIS accommodates the concept of a "Producer Source" with a unique Producer Source ID to help distinguish multiple sources of SIPs from a single Producer.
