Introduction

• Subject access points facilitate browsing, faceted browsing, and advanced searching of the Archives Catalogue.
  
  
• Part II of the Rules for Archival Description (RAD) defines rules on how to establish non-subject access points (e.g., headings for persons, corporate bodies, places). Although RAD does not provide guidance on subject access points, most archives management software applications, including Access to Memory (AtoM), support subject access points.
  
  
• The University Archives uses the Archives Catalogue to manage a controlled vocabulary of approved subject terms. The controlled vocabulary is primarily derived from authorized headings found in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). 
  
  
• This page provides guidance on how to link archival descriptions to existing subject terms. Requests for new subject terms should be sent to editors and administrators of the Archives Catalogue. 

Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

The Archives Catalogue has a list of more than 400 subject headings derived from the Library of Congress Subject Headings database (LCSH). LCSH is also the preferred source for geographic place headings.
