Guiding principles for accessioning
Introduction
Archival accessioning follows an archival appraisal decision identifying the records as having enduring value in relation to the mandate and collecting goals of the repository.
An accession can include records from a single provenance or multiple provenances.
A fonds can be constructed from multiple accessions (i.e., accruals) from one or more sources.
Maintaining the intellectual and physical relationships between and within accessions and archival fonds is one of the most important tasks carried out by Archives staff.
Accessioning results in an accession record that captures information relating to key points in the accession process, making explicit the nature of acquired archival material, its source or provenance, and events related to how that material was transferred to and handled by an institution.
See the Introduction to the Canadian Archival Accession Information Standard (CAAIS) for more general information on accessioning.
