11.1 - Tools and supplies

Introduction


This page provides a list of tools and supplies needed to support video digitization.

List of supplies


  • Equipment maintenance

    • Head cleaner: MG Chemicals

    • Swabs: MG Chemicals

    • 91% de-natured alcohol (for cleaning tape path)

    • Empty ¼ inch audio reel to elevate on packing deck

    • Lint free cleaning cloths (many) [BVAC uses Tex Wipes, densely knit cotton that leaves no residue from a medical supply company, https://www.texwipe.com/products/wipers-all/default.aspx%5D

  • Tape handling and preservation

    • Nitrile gloves for handling tape and film

    • Silicone lubricant for cleaning tape if necessary (e.g., D5, Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane to relubricate for transfer)

    • Polypropylene sleeves to house any associated paper on exterior of cases instead of inside with tape (physically separating paper from the videotape will protect the tape from old paper particles)

    • New labels that don’t fade so quickly, or label protectors

    • Extra 1.5” reels in case of breakage

    • Extra cases to replace degrading and offgassing cases

  • Logbook or clipboard for tracking incoming/outgoing tapes from archive

  • Broom and dustpan, swiffer, for cleaning dust and debris from hallway
